About SJTU and SPA
Established in 1896 and located in Shangha,Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU) is one of the oldest and most prestigious universities in China. With a shining history of more than 127 years, SJTU is implementing a grand blueprint for future development and making continued efforts to build a top university in the world.
The Department of Physics, SJTU was established in 1928. It was one of the earliest physics departments in China. In 2015, the Department established a strong program of Astronomy and Astrophysics, and was renamed as the School of Physics and Astronomy (SPA) in 2017. Taking the value of “high starting point, strong foundation, strict requirements, emphasis on practice and innovation”, SPA aims to build a world-class school of physics and astronomy. After a decade of rapid growth, SPA becomes one of the most vigorous and comprehensive physics departments nationwide. Now SJTU physics is the National First-Class Subject, and was ranked 40th worldwide (4th in China) by 2022 US News Subject Rankings.
SPA is located in Minhang Campus of Shanghai Jiao Tong University, covering an area of more than 42,000 square meters, with a conducive working conditions and environment. SPA has a national collaborative innovation center, three key laboratories of the Ministry of Education and one Shanghai key laboratory, and has computational physics platform, micro-nano machining and testing platform and other public platforms.
SPA presently has more than 170 faculty members in total. In the past five years, we published 3,000+ peer-reviewed papers, with 500+ papers are published in top journals such as Science (series), Nature (series), and PRL/PRX. We secured 400+ research programs from central government agencies, and the annual total budget has been 100+ million RMB for a decade’s time.
SPA seeks highly qualified candidates with physics and/or astronomy backgrounds, including the research areas:
Physics
Particle and nuclear physics
Condensed matter physics
Plasma physics
Optics
Atomic and molecular physics computational physics
Soft matter and biophysics
Astronomy
Observational cosmology
